Why #JamaalBowman’s #NewYork primary is huge for pro-#Israel groups
An #AIPAC-aligned #superPAC & others have spent increasingly huge sums of money in high-profile #Democrat primaries. Their record is mixed, but a #Bowman defeat would be their biggest win yet.
Pro-Israel groups make up an increasingly large presence in #primaries for #Congress. Even so, the effort to unseat Rep #JamaalBowman in Tue’s #primary is extraordinary.
The result could reverberate greatly in the evolving internal #Democrat debate over the #war in #Gaza.
That’s because, while the $ amts are becoming larger & the results have been mostly positive for the pro-Israel groups, their record is still mixed in the highest-profile races. Unseating #Bowman would be the strongest sign yet that criticizing #Israel is a recipe for heartburn & may be a contributing factor in an incumbent’s loss.
It would also be a particularly significant victory given that these groups failed to stop #Bowman in 2020 — & given that the #Democrat base has trended sharply away from #Israel in recent months.
The #UnitedDemocracyProject super #PAC, which is aligned w/the American Israel Public Affairs Cmte (#AIPAC) & another prominent grp, Democratic Majority for Israel, have spent >$60M on Democrat congressional primaries since the 2020 election.
@Nonilex I wonder if the polls are skewed towards the Westchester suburbs where people are wealthier and likely more centrist.
@Nonilex 94% of his district is heavily jewish, and the vast majority of them feel Bowman’s comments on Gaza go far beyond an understandable call for peace (to which the only true opponents are IRAN, Hamas & Bibi) into flat out antisemitism (namely all jews are responsible for Bibis actions). An insurmountable mistake to betray the proportionally largest group of white supporters of the Civil Rights movement from its inception up to the present. Well done, sir.
