I don't think the Trump/Musk firing spree has to do with a "drive to cut federal spending". Even if they fired half of all federal employees that would only amount to less than 2% of the federal budget. The objective is to cause chaos and destruction to weaken the United States, not to save money in salaries.
To predict what Trump will do, think: What would Putin want? That is what Trump will do.
