#Trump’s assertion that a gang is committing crimes in the #US at the direction of #Venezuela’s govt was critical to his invocation of a wartime #law last wk to summarily [w/o #DueProcess] deport people whom ofcls suspected of belonging to that group.
But US #intelligence agencies circulated findings last month that stand starkly at odds w/Trump’s claims…. The doc, dated Feb 26, summarized the shared judgment of the nation’s spy agencies that the gang was not controlled by the Venezuelan govt.
The disclosure calls into question the credibility of #Trump’s basis for invoking a rarely used wartime #law, the #AlienEnemiesAct of 1798, to transfer a group of #Venezuelans to a high-security prison in #ElSalvador last weekend, with no #DueProcess.
The #intelligence community assessment concluded that the gang, #TrenDeAragua, was not directed by #Venezuela’s govt or committing crimes in the #US on its orders….
…Most of the #intelligence community, including the #CIA & the #NSA, agreed w/that assessment.
Only one agency, the #FBI [#KashPatel], partly dissented. It maintained the gang has a connection to the admin of #Venezuela’s #authoritarian president, Nicolás #Maduro, based on information the other agencies did not find credible.
"other agencies did not find credible." Because it was written in sharpie
@Nonilex WMDs again but it's justification to invade the US
