#PamBondi Suggests #Signal Chat Episode Is Unlikely to Be Criminally Investigated
#Trump’s attorney general said the focus should be on the success of the U.S. military strike in Yemen, not that #military information was shared in advance in a group text among top officials.

#PamBondi, speaking at a news conference in Virginia, was asked about the public debate surrounding #Defense Secy #PeteHegseth after he sent details of a coming attack on rebels in #Yemen to senior #Trump admin ofcls in a #Signal group chat that accidentally included a magazine editor.
“It was sensitive information, not classified, & inadvertently released,” Bondi said, while praising the #military op.
“What we should be talking about is, it was a very successful mission,” she said, before quickly accusing Democrats from previous administrations of mishandling #classified info [who faced investigations].
“If you want to talk about classified information, talk about what was in Hillary Clinton’s home,” she said. “Talk about the classified documents in Joe Biden’s garage, that Hunter Biden had access to.”
The #DOJ opened investigations into Clinton & Biden in those instances, but neither ultimately faced criminal charges. She did not mention the prosecution of #Trump over his mishandling of #ClassifiedDocuments after his first term — a case which was ultimately abandoned when he won a second term.
In this case, #PamBondi seemed to be ruling out any similar investigation to determine all the facts.
Dating back to at least the Reagan admin, the govt has considered the details of “#military plans, weapons, or operations” to be #classified.
…Under federal #law, it is possible for people to be charged with crimes for mishandling national #defense information that is not classified, but such prosecutions are very rare.
…#Hegseth & other snr officials have argued that the information he shared was not #classified, & that it was ultimately up to his dept to decide what of its info should be considered classified.
#NationalSecurity experts said that argument fails a test of basic common sense about the danger of letting #military plans leak before an operation, & that it goes against longtime practice among military & #intelligence agencies.
@Nonilex
but Senate Republicans are all for opening up the DoD to tourists. Make the Pentagon a big swingers bar, where Russian and Chinese agents can come in, get laid, get drunk, and get combat plans all in one-stop shopping.
@Nonilex it isn’t just “longtime practice”. There are laws, specific rules, and means for government related discussions that specifically exclude the use of unsecured mobile phones
This was not planning a BBQ between coworkers. Even then, I wouldn’t want foreign intelligence or hackers to know we’d all be at one place at one time
Obviously they’re trying to assure their texts are not saved for posterity, and makes you wonder what else is being discussed off the record?
@Nonilex And in this administration, they will be nonexistent.
