@Dunstable The whole, butter on a ham sandwich was a culinary assault my 17 year old self was not prepared for. 🤣 @Thebratdragon @RickiTarr

@Pineywoozle @Dunstable @RickiTarr you don't butter your bread? How do you stop the sandwich being dry?

@pineywoozle ‘s #3WordNote

@Thebratdragon LoL Mayo and a good French mustard 😉 I just saw a pic of Starmer & Macron in a jeep so I know it’s OK. @Dunstable @RickiTarr

@Pineywoozle @Dunstable @RickiTarr french mustard is ok, prefer English, but mayo? To me that goes on lettuce or chicken, not ham.

A really good ham sandwich is bread, butter, ham (honey roast for me), english mustard, Cheddar cheese, butter and bread.

@Thebratdragon A good Mayo like Dukes or a Belgian one with mustard is great on ham. You should try it. LoL the ham is a soft low note & the Mayo and mustard are both sharp/acidic & creamy. It actually adds almost the same note a good cheddar does just a little sharper. 😊 @Dunstable @RickiTarr

@Pineywoozle @Thebratdragon @Dunstable I now have honey butter rolls in the oven because you all keep making me hungry

@RickiTarr LoL Sounds nummy. I’m about to have a bowl of thick homemade potato soup. I made it yesterday day so the flavors have reached their peak. Enjoy your rolls! 😜 🥰 @Thebratdragon @Dunstable

@Pineywoozle @Dunstable @RickiTarr

Ahh but colmans english mustard is a different breed of mustard. So we get creamy from the butter, sharp from the cheese and spice in the mustard.

@RickiTarr @Pineywoozle @Dunstable no but I was noting what flavour sets go together. See also horseradish etc in the list.

@RickiTarr @Thebratdragon @Pineywoozle @Dunstable that's because there is a northern and a southern version of mustard over here and we've been waging a war for centuries over which one is the true German™ mustard.

(southern is dark, sweet and grainy; northern is sharp, tangy and creamy)

@megaphon @RickiTarr @Pineywoozle @Dunstable I only know the Northern version.

I also like good wholegrain mustards, especially scott8sh ones with whiskey.

@Pineywoozle @RickiTarr @Thebratdragon @megaphon @Dunstable That sound you hear is half of Mastodon running to their shelves for the scotch and mustard seeds.

@dan613 It def seems like a nummy combo. I’d totally be with them if I wasn’t already up to my ears weaving new shoes & carving new dinner plates. 😜 @RickiTarr @Thebratdragon @megaphon @Dunstable

@Thebratdragon LoL you should try it some time. It’s a very similar flavor profile but it feels lighter & less oily. You aren’t left with the lovely but to me wholly unnecessary butter mouthfeel, after each bite. 😉 @Dunstable @RickiTarr

@Pineywoozle @Dunstable @RickiTarr probably too much butter then. The only time butter should be thick is on thick hot toast.

@Thebratdragon LoL probably. It was at a lay-by on our way from London to Edinburgh. We had Eurail passes for the continent but hitched all over GB for a month on that first trip. Got a ride from Jackie Stewart of all people, when we were leaving E for Glasgow. 😜 @Dunstable @RickiTarr

@Pineywoozle @Thebratdragon @Dunstable @RickiTarr

In Europe, not just in Britain, we put butter on our bread and in our sandwiches.

Because we have decent butter.

Mayonnaise can be added to salad ingredients in some sandwiches, but the bread is spread with butter.

Although not kosher, butter and ham, with or without cheese, is a classic French sandwich filling.

@regordane I buy Irish butter here in the states. It’s nice but we have good butter too, just different. . I’ve traveled all over France quite a few times & never had a sandwich with butter on it.. To be honest though, we usually just buy good bread, cheese & some meat & make our own for lunch & don’t think I’ve ever had a cold sandwich for dinner. @Thebratdragon @Dunstable @RickiTarr

@Pineywoozle @Thebratdragon @Dunstable @RickiTarr

I don't get that. Anywhere I have been in France (I have been in a lot of places in France) sandwiches have always been buttered.

@regordane Re read the post sorry if it wasn’t clear. I said we didn’t eat sandwiches made by the French. LoL we bought ingredients in France & made our own. @Thebratdragon @Dunstable @RickiTarr

@Pineywoozle @Thebratdragon @Dunstable @RickiTarr

Oh sure, when we're hiking in France we just take bread and cheese or similar stuff for lunch. But if it's not buttered, it's not a sandwich.

@Pineywoozle @regordane @Thebratdragon @Dunstable @RickiTarr "Jambon-beurre" is a classical french baguette sandwich... that nobody orders anymore in France just because there are more tasty options nowadays with less fat. But I admit I'm a white collar French who doesn't need fat to sit at my desk.

@Pineywoozle @dolmen

Yes, it's true that fancy wokeness has infected France as well the UK. But fear not, some traditionalists remain.

Many boulangeries sell ready-made sandwiches, with plenty of jambon-beurre on display. I assume the reason they make them is because people buy them.

@regordane @dolmen I believe ya. I just don’t eat ready made sandwiches on vacation. I prefer an extra month of immersive fun to over spending on lunch. 😜
