Today, about 50 Minnesotans gathered in front of the headquarters of the MN Department of Natural Resources to call for urgent state and federal action on #climate. This was part of a national day of action honoring the late water protector Joye Braun, held on her birthday and the halfway point of President Biden's term.
Led by our friends at Honor the Earth, we wrote letters to the DNR and postcards to President Biden, and uplifted memories from members of our community who knew Joye well.
When it came time to deliver the letters -- to a public agency, at its main public entrance, during business hours -- the DNR locked the door and would not communicate with the group assembled outside, refusing to even send someone out to accept people's heartfelt thoughts. This same lack of transparency and openness to constituents has been shown by the DNR throughout its handling of the Line 3 pipeline permits. Eventually, a building manager accepted the letters in the parking lot.
Joye Braun's call was for President Biden to declare a climate emergency. We reiterate that call, and ask that Biden do all within his executive power to stand with the communities fighting the Line 5 pipeline at Bad River and in Michigan.
