I am loving that things are finally moving to make European countries less dependent on US software (especially cloud providers), but I am disappointed that there isn't more of a focus on open source software.

There are several government programs within EU counties to fund the development of open source software. We need WAY more of that, coordinated at the EU level.

The best way to avoid being beholden to big tech is to fund viable open source alternatives.

@notjustbikes I am part of a group of experienced IT people that have experience in building cloud platforms (a la aws / azure etc).

We'd LOVE ❤️ to build a NON-profit, European created & operated public cloud and only charge for costs... (since we don't like the idea of yet another big tech firm squeezing money from people)

Problem is that we have no clue where to even get started with support from government or Europe.... which we'd need because I doubt we'd get VC funding. 😋

@jfbucas @notjustbikes No, we're an as of yet informal band of colleagues. We have the smart, we have the knowhow and the desire to do something positive. Just no idea how to do something like this from a financial point of view.

@chaosmonkey @notjustbikes @eu_os seems to be starting something.

@darth made a video explaining what this is about.

@jfbucas @notjustbikes @eu_os @darth Yeah saw that, but that is only an OS as near as I can tell. Our group is hoping to replace AWS and such. 😅

@darth @jfbucas @notjustbikes @eu_os Well... didn't say we'd get anywhere close, but we (as a community) should be setting our goals high if we want to protect and improve freedom and open source IMHO.

@chaosmonkey that’s very true. But you got me intrigued with “replacing aws”

@jfbucas @notjustbikes @eu_os

That's quite a goal! Compared to software dev, when it comes to hardware, even more in that scale you are talking about the sums needed get increasingly high!
That's nothing you can do in your garage! 😱🤷🏼‍♂️
But nevertheless an intriguing and fascinating project! 😁 👍

@stiefel_fan @darth @jfbucas @notjustbikes @eu_os

Indeed, very ambitious. If we don't get the funds worked out, it will never happen so I'm not holding my breath. However, we need to be ambitious.

@chaosmonkey @notjustbikes I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but @nlnet funds projects that contribute to an open internet. You can read about it here: nlnet.nl/funding.html

nlnet.nlNLnet; Apply for funding

@thymos @notjustbikes @nlnet I know them. 👍 I also found Sovereign tech fund and several others but most if not all of them do not provide funding to infrastructure services.

Despite more than one fund talking about wanting to support open source infrastructure, they mean development of software cornerstones.

It's almost like nobody realizes that open source also needs true infrastructure services it can use to get developed on and possibly hosted on. /s 😂

@chaosmonkey @notjustbikes there’s more & more people like this ; getting together in a cooperative can be a viable path ; check out @coopcloud

@chaosmonkey @notjustbikes come find us, we'd be happy to hear from you! -- d1

@becha

@joostvb @notjustbikes @nlnet @NGIZero Except that's not for those running services.
