Of course Nimarata Haley (AKA, Nikki Haley) knows the real reason for the civil war. Her father taught at an HBCU in South Carolina. That's not the interesting question. The interesting question is *why* she lied about it.

Lying to your children about the cause of the civil war doesn't work in 2023. Because I will tell your kids the real reason.
Then your kids will know anyway, but they will also know that you lied to them in your attempt to be racist and cruel.
If your entire way of life depends on you being able to lie to your own children, for their entire adult lives, in an era when access to information is at everyone's fingertips?
Then yeah, I understand why you'd want to outlaw books about racism and fascism, end libraries and librarians, corrupt school curricula, and shout things like "Ban Tik-Tok!" while shaking your fist at the cloud.
Your kids will still disown you when they learn the truth, and will not be coming home for Thanksgiving.
@mekkaokereke There's a strong undercurrent of terror at their children being real people with independent minds and bodies among conservatives. It manifests here with the book bans, as well as all that grim legislation on parental notification with queer kids, outright transition bans, creepy sex education requirements, anti-vaxxing... the list goes on and on and all of it can be traced to fear of their children choosing to cut them off.
And it's funny because their kids absolutely WILL
@stavvers @mekkaokereke every so often in the UK parents try to force the NHS to tell them if their children access medical care, especially contraception or abortion but also mental health stuff etc
@Ailbhe @mekkaokereke idk if you've ever looked into the history of Gillick competencies (ie the legal right for young people to NOT have their medical info disclosed to parents) but it's quite funny because it's named after a woman who brought a lawsuit in the 80s *insisting* she should be told if her daughters were on the pill (and lost)
