Octothorpe 117 is here! We discuss the recent Worldcon, Glasgow 2024, talking mostly about registration, attendance, and programme. Spoiler: we quite liked it, listeners. Listen here! https://octothorpe.podbean.com/e/117-you-made-that-joke-last-time-john/
@octothorpecast Re: counting attendees of Worldcons: I have it on good authority (i.e. straight from the person who calculated the statistics) that the Helsinki day memberships were deduplicated, i.e. one person visiting on multiple days only counted as one day pass holder. In addition, unclear cases were left out of the statistics, so it is a conservative estimate.
@tero Thanks for getting in touch!
@octothorpecast No worries! Really enjoyed the episode(s) on Worldcon BTW!
@tero @octothorpecast contrariwise, the *Glasgow* Worldcon almost certainly significantly underestimated the number of first-time attendees - the "First Worldcon" rate was more expensive than the "Scottish Resident" rate, so any reasonable first time Scot would have chosen the other ticket and not been counted in the stats (I know that happened to me - I had to ask for my first worldcon ribbon because I didn't buy that kind of ticket).
Interpreting stats is subtle!
@aoanla @octothorpecast True, and almost nobody bothers to document their methods.
The first-time attendees for Glasgow still counted against the total though so only the distribution of memberships was affected.
