We usually crosspost to Twitter and Bluesky. Today's thread is less relevant here, which is non-algorithmic. Nevertheless, we're gonna crosspost here to remind you of how good we have it here...

If you can read this, you probably have your timeline set to chronological posts from accounts you follow. Basic anatomical information is subjected to online censorship. Our posts are frequently shadowbanned or slapped with content filters. Help us break through the silence https://www.gofundme.com/f/btscc2
We are by far the only gynaecological health organisation who face online censorship for simply talking about vaginas and vulvas. For simply using anatomically correct words. For encouraging discussion and conversation. This is deemed "adult" by moderators.
Half the world has one. Most of us came out of one. There's nothing "adult" about this part of the anatomy. It's not like a vagina suddenly manifests on your 18th birthday!
And yet someone is making the decisions as to what you can and cannot show or say online. The tools to name their anatomy, and an understanding of what is healthy and what is not is deemed information for adults only. Perhaps it's because those writing the algorithms only encounter this normal part of the anatomy in porn.
On Instagram, our posts are shadowbanned. On Facebook, they're outright banned. We have a posting ban on Tiktok, and Bluesky even automatically labels a link to our fundraising campaign as "adult content"!
So how do we cut through? Several ways. First of all, you cannot censor the physical world in the way that it is so easy to do so online. Our London base is a space where it is free to come together to learn and celebrate.
Online, we get told to tone it down. Maybe say "fajima" or a string of characters and numbers. We choose not to do this, because that is not what it is called. Instead, we rely on organic reach and posting things which will be shared among friends.
We need your help to keep doing this. It requires a lot of work to make good posts and keep a physical space open in this economy. Your donations make a difference, and enable us to keep on defying censorship and replace stigma with honesty. Any donation you make makes a huge difference https://www.gofundme.com/f/btscc2
@vagina_museum Did you ever notice a difference to the Fediverse which is without algorithms and shadowbans?
When I still was on Insta and Birdcrap, I was shadowbanned for words like climate and biodiversity. It's propaganda platforms.
@vagina_museum@masto.ai can't you appeal to Bluesky regarding tagging as adult content?
@vagina_museum
In the uncut version Anne Frank's diary she writes to her imaginary friend Kitty with an explicit description of her vulva and wonders how she will be able to have sex or have a baby when she can only put one finger into her vagina. Unfortunately she died aged 15 without being able to experience either, it seems.
@vagina_museum
certainly not with that attitude
@vagina_museum this is insane. What do the other gynaecologist health organisations use instead of vagina and vulva? Or do they simply don't talk?
@amunizp you'll see quite a few accounts, especially on insta and tiktok, using weird strings of characters and numbers to create a self-censored approximation of the word rather than actually using it!
@vagina_museum Did you mean "We are by the the only ..." ? It seems both grammatically iffy, and also like the opposite of what I'd expected you might say.
Just checking :-)
@vagina_museum Ah, you probably mean "We are far from the only ...", right?
@vagina_museum
I find it a bit fascinating that US culture cannot see nudity as not inherently sexual. There is a big difference between body parts and body parts in a sexual context, I cannot wrap my head around it. I mean it's not the vulva by itself that arouses me (as a heterossexual man).
Oral sex exists, but mouths are not "censored", on the other hand breasts whose primary function is to feed babies are seen as sexual. Does it make sense ?
@jsoares @vagina_museum Not to mention, the word “vulva” itself is pretty unsexy. Who’s ever heard it used in porn? Pretty sure the answer is, no one!
