"A viral video released Tuesday appears to capture a Bluffton teacher refusing to let students use the bathroom unless they stood for the Pledge of Allegiance first. 'So if we don’t stand for the pledge, we cannot use the restroom?' one student asked. 'Right,' the teacher responded. When students pushed back, the teacher continued to dismiss their concerns. He even openly mocked them when they sought to advocate for themselves. Even a student saying they have diabetes didn’t seem to matter. My Email to my County Commissioner about public restrooms for the unhoused that I sent recently (I originally addressed this to my old Commissioner and not the new/ current one.):

Mr. [Baca],

I'm a recent transplant to ABQ and live in [District 2]. I am curious if the County has any plans to install public restrooms and/ or port-a-potties near where the unhoused frequently congregate.

I was prompted to write you about that this evening because of an incident I witnessed yesterday. I was on Central near Atrisco and witnessed an unhoused person defecating against a building.

When you take into account the fact that literally every... single... business... has a sign that either says "No Public Restrooms" or "Restrooms Are For Customers Only" then it truly has to make someone wonder where does a society expect its unhoused to relieve themselves?

Certainly having the unhoused urinate and defecate in public spaces is not only unsanitary, but with no water to wash their hands this leads to an unhygienic situation as well. Not to mention the waste brings with it a slew of pathogens that could be exposed to the public.

At the very least I think the County should be providing port-a-potties maybe as part of the County's solid waste removal services.

This is what success looks like. I removed the old and busted bathroom sink and cabinet today and installed this new one. Just myself and my dear wifey, A.K.A. my “Lovely Assistant”. She saved my sanity on this project.

Ask me anything. I didn’t take before or in-progress pictures. I just wanted to git ‘er dun, as the kids say these days. They say that, right?
