The Mysterious Monster March
Front cover of a children's picture book that I am working on.

As another day ends and darkness falls,
worries begin to grow. The monsters realize they
are now far away from their homes and entering
a world that no one has ever been before.

Anxious whispers and tearful sobs burst out.
"Beware! Beware! one monster pleads.
There is danger ahead!" But no one has stopped
for sleep this night. The leaders keep them
marching, marching, towards a distant light.

Still deep within a dense twilight forest, several monsters gather together. Their facial expressions show fear and worry. One large monster dramatically shares his anxiety with a little blue monster, while another has its arm around its back. One graceful monster glances behind itself in alarm, while another buries its face in its hands, teeth chattering in terror.

Almost hidden within a pile of maple leaves and tucked into the roots of a tree, stands a solitary, spiky haired creature of unknown origin. Arms outstretched, with a slight scowl on its face, it appears to be thinking of something important - perhaps what it would like to eat for lunch. Far back, lurking behind a tree, a young girl is watching. Drawn in black, white and gray graphite/pencil. NOTE: This description is created especially for my lovely blind friend, Georgiana. :-)

Midnight Monsters: A Startled Moontinkifer
Do not be afraid. Like many night creatures, they just wish to be left alone. These secretive beings often hide in the shadows, except when the moon is full and bright. The midnight moon is their time of wonder and if you happen to be in the right place at the right time, you just may witness some magical happenings. This particular midnight monster is called Moontinkifer and can be found high up in the Balkan mountain range on the border between Bulgaria and eastern Serbia . It was not easy getting to this destination, but I have found it worth the effort, expense and skinned knees. Legend says that if one is lucky enough to spot them during the day, they appear as drab, colorless creatures, almost invisible against the mountain landscape of rocks and boulders. They shine (literally) at night when they come out of their hiding places to dance. Moonlight causes a shimmering transformation from dull gray to a luminous rainbow colored glow! It is believed that the glimmer of incandescent color and magical movements is their way of attracting a mate. Otherwise, they appear to be quite shy, non-aggressive individuals, who unfortunately, startle easily.
