Nikolaus I wanted everyone to stay longer than expected w/o additional payment. Haydn diplomatically wrote into the score of the final adagio: each musician stops playing & leaves until just two muted violins remain

While Copland wasn’t officially a member of The Communist Party but he was socially active with members of socialist, communist, anarchist and generally politically left-wing groups/people which unfortunately meant that he was both called before The HUAC and was blacklisted by McCarthy for several years. He later was selected by President JFK and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President LBJ in 1964.
