"SPRING" LIBRARY RESOURCES - Cleaning/Organizing, Gardening & Donating!

SPRING CLEANING

"With Spring around the corner, Joplin Public Library can help you get your home and garden prepped for the new season!

"Spring is the time to tackle the cleaning and repairing you've put off all winter. Check out a book on decluttering, a complete guide to cleaning the whole house, or handy hints on storage, repairs, and maintenance.

"Need a tool for spring cleaning? Check out the #LibraryOfThings for a professional carpet cleaner, a household tool kit, or a dryer vent cleaning system.

"Just need something to listen to while you clean? Libby and hoopla have great audiobooks you can stream from your devices!

SPRING GARDENING

"If you have a garden you want to get ready for Spring, you'll want to be certain to use Library resources as well!

"The annual plant swap on March 29 is a great place to meet fellow plant lovers and get new plants, cuttings, and seeds!

"Browse the book selection for instructions on vegetable gardening, flower gardening and more. If you're more of a visual learning, stream Great Courses How to Grow Anything on Kanopy using your JPL card!

"Just dipping your toes into gardening? Check out our gardening set from the Library of Things and try before you buy!

DONATIONS ACCEPTED

"Also, if you`re decluttering and wondering where to go with your gently used books, movies, and magazines. Bring them to the Library.

"The Joplin Public Library accepts donations of GENTLY USED books, DVDs, CDs and recent issues of popular magazines. As part of their volunteer duties, Friends of the Joplin Public Library manage the donated items and the sale shelf. Funds raised will help to support the Friends in their mission of enhancing and supporting the Library. They would love to have your items to sell."

If you know a #SeniorCitizen in your neighborhood, you should talk to them about having hard copies of their important #SocialSecurity documents. And you should help them get copies if you're able and if they're willing to trust you to help them.

Or send them to the local public library for help. If it's a decent #PublicLibrary then the staff might have the time and skills to help them.

A local #SeniorCenter might also be able to help.

Good luck out there and stay frosty.

Associated Press: "IMLS was established in 1996 by a Republican-led Congress and has a mission to “advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development.” The institute combined the services of previous government agencies, including the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science and the Institute of Museum Services.

"It distributes thousands of grants nationwide, totaling in recent years to more than $200 million annually."

So the people wielding the chainsaws in Washington DC seem to think that nobody will miss the #IMLS. Such a piddly amount of money!

Maybe they don't read. Or watch video. Or have young children. Or do research. Or want to see historical photos and newspapers. Or visit museums. Or read.

#Texas: #GreenThumbs, #BookWorms team to create free seed library at #LongviewPublicLibrary

by Jordan Green Mar 6, 2025

"Something seedy is happening at the #Longview #PublicLibrary.

"The Gregg County Master Gardeners Association has partnered with library to create the #SproutAndShare #SeedLibrary, which will allow novice and experienced gardeners alike to pick up free seeds to plant in their own gardens.
The library and gardening association will host a grand opening and educational event at 10:30 a.m. Saturday [yesterday].

"A member of the association sprouted the idea for the seed library, according to Shaniqua Davis, agent for the Texas AgriLife Extension Office in Gregg County. The seed library will be open to the public during the library’s operating hours: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

"Leah Shreves, technical services supervisor for the Longview Public Library, said the seed library will help people learn to produce their own food, whether they live in a home or in an apartment.

"'It’s a way to kind of try and help provide fresh and healthy foods that people can grow on their own to decrease their grocery bill and could also be a relaxing and rewarding hobby,' Shreves said.

"'We’re wanting to give back to the community and give them options and learn that they can grow their own food.'

"The library will have 16 varieties of plant seeds to start with, ranging from green beans and snap peas to watermelon and flower seeds. More than 800 seed packets will be stocked in the library when it opens. Patrons can pick up seven packets per visit. Each packet will have a QR code on it that people can scan, directing them to more information about the plant.

"Master gardeners association members plan to offer at least one educational class per quarter that will be free to the public, Shreves said. During Saturday’s grand opening, gardeners will discuss some of the basics of gardening.

"The library is at 222 W. Cotton St. For more information, call (903) 237-1350."
