Chris Trottier<p>I’m excited to announce that a new Fediverse server, <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a>, is open for registrations.</p><p><strong>What is Akkomane?</strong></p><p>Akkomane is a portmanteau of “Akkoma + Mangane”. It’s how I refer to Akkoma servers with a Mangane front-end. Akkoma is resource efficient and stable Fediverse server software that’s been under active development. Mangane provides a Twitter-like UI/UX that is both attractive and feature rich. It’s my opinion that Akkomane has an exciting future on the Fediverse.</p><p><strong>What is <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a></strong>?</p><p>This is a general Akkomane server for casual chat. Few Akkomane servers exist, but I hope to change that. I have therefore created <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a> as a general purpose Akkomane server for people to try out Akkomane.</p><p><strong>Is <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a> open for everyone?</strong></p><p>Eventually, yes. However, since this is the <em>first</em> general Akkomane server on the Internet (as far as I know), I have taken steps to ensure general stability. Therefore, initial sign-ups will be capped at 20 people. To sign up for <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a>, you will need to fill out an application. Once approved, you can post to <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a> to your heart’s content. While anyone can apply to join <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a>, special consideration will be given to developers and server admins interested on working with Akkomane. </p><p><strong>How well does <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a> work now</strong>?</p><p>So far, I’ve been impressed with the results. I’ve been testing out Akkomane for six months, and I’ve grown confident that it is usable for <em>most</em> people. I now run it for a small server, <a href="http://atomicpoet.org" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">atomicpoet.org</a>, which successfully federates with 23,000 servers. It’s responsive enough to allow me to share messages to 13.5K followers. Now <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a> is the next step in demonstrating how Akkomane can scale.</p><p><strong>What are the Terms of Service for <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a></strong>?</p><p>The Terms of Service can be found <a href="https://akkomane.social/notice/AgiUBTRAV9CI7Zax1c" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">here</a>. They’re pinned to my profile because currently, Mangane has a bug with displaying a dedicated TOS page.</p><p><strong>What servers does <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a> block?</strong></p><p>Currently, everything on the Tier 0 list of blocks compiled by <span class="h-card"><a class="u-url mention" href="https://oliphant.social/@oliphant" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>oliphant</span></a></span> is also being blocked by <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a>. </p><p><strong>Why do I occasionally see French?</strong></p><p>Because Mangane is developed by a French-speaking community, occasionally you’ll see stuff that has not yet been localized into English. This doesn’t happen often, but it’s there. </p><p><strong>Who is running the day-to-day maintenance of <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a>?</strong></p><p>I, Chris Trottier, am running the day-to-day operations of <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a>, including all moderation. <span class="h-card"><a class="u-url mention" href="https://spacehost.team/@spacehost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>spacehost</span></a></span>, run by <span class="h-card"><a class="u-url mention" href="https://mastodon.social/@reiver" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>reiver</span></a></span>, takes care of the daily maintenance and back-end work. I’ve been using their services since May 2023. Full disclosure: I occasionally consult for <a class="hashtag" href="https://akkomane.social/tag/spacehost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#SpaceHost</a>. </p><p><strong>Should I join <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a>?</strong></p><p>Well, do you want an incredible and attractive <a class="hashtag" href="https://akkomane.social/tag/fediverse" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Fediverse</a> experience that takes everything nice about <a class="hashtag" href="https://akkomane.social/tag/twitter" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Twitter</a> and improves on it drastically? If that’s you, then <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a> might be your home. </p><p><em>To all future members, welcome to <a href="http://akkomane.social" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">akkomane.social</a>!</em></p>
