What a great story! The writer moved from the U.S. to the Netherlands and in 8 months returned to visit and experienced total culture shock!
We're finally back, starting with the long-overdue video on #cultureshock! What is it and how do you deal with it? More inside! #vlog #culture #shock #mentalhealth #travel #ExpatLife #expat #expatriates
All through school, teachers, administrators, and professors had us refer to them by title and last name—Mr. Duda, Mrs. White, Prof. Samuels, etc.
It came as a shock to me, when I got my first job in corporate America, and bosses decades my senior insisted I call them by their first names.
@catastrophines Okay another question: have you seen someone put on their shoes standing up using a long shoe horn? #cultureshock
The new video from @TechConnectify initially made me feel like I'd fallen through a portal to another plane of reality where everything was weird.
.... Then, towards the end of it I realised that bizarro dimension was called "The United States of America"
Really amusing, if perhaps predictably in-character, how MP3 CDs weren't -- A thing -- Over there. Described as this niche feature of some players that no one really noticed or cared about.
They were the default media format over here in Brazil for some 15 years, until optical media started being phased out everywhere in the mid 10s.
.... And yes, 99.99% of them were pirated af, burned on the shops' own backroom (or, of course, at home if you were tech-y like I was) from tunes downloaded from eMule/Kazaa/etc.
So it does make sense it never really ~happened~ in the US. But still feels surreal.
in your culture, is calling someone you’ve just met by their name’s common nickname odd and/or rude?

I had so little culture shock upon entering Europe, but even now, *months* after returning to the United States, I still catch myself bewildered or dismayed that this or that isn't like it is in Amsterdam; subconsciously I'm still there!

A new Culture Shock track just dropped.
I think the spatial (spacial for those who do) levels are ample, indeed.
Talking to an American friend and they mention that they don't like baked beans in tomato sauce, they only like baked beans. And I am confusious because baked beans ... is in tomato sauce, like there's no "baked beans in tomato sauce" it's just baked beans.
Found out they add brown sugar to their beans. I—I just.... HUH?
A friend warns me I might be in for culture shock...upon *returning* to the US. Nobody seemed to think I'd get any upon *leaving*; just when I got back. Considering my reaction to parts of Europe that remind me more of my own country, they might just be right...
Painting is Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach's "Abschied".

MARTY FRIEDMAN: 'Key To Living Happily Outside Your Home Country Is Realizing That You Will Never 'Belong' To Another Culture'
Re: Russians Don’t Smile
A Russian girl in Australia had her car's plates stolen. To replace them, police requires a statement confirming that she is in a relationship with her husband.
The Ru girl goes to the Justice of the Peace (that’s a police notary) at the police station to verify this relationship statement.
The Justice refuses to sign the document because the girl looks too grumpy.

If you're from the USA, this blog post by someone from Germany about their impression of US school buses might be interesting:

"What can I do to help Ukraine?"
Well -- you can boost this video of the superb band La Horsa Bianca doing a stellar cover of the Grateful Dead's classic China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider... in UKRAINIAN!
By doing so, you'll be pointing people toward Culture Shock in Kharkiv, which helps the UA army.
And of course, you can donate to support them:

Here we are all on
TIL that some wedding invitations don't include the actual wedding.
I'm familiar with the concept of two sets of invitations. We had ceremony + afternoon tea & cake, and also those + dinner reception for close friends and family (including anyone who'd travelled from out of town to be there).
But the idea of inviting someone to your wedding in a way that excludes them from the actual wedding is just bizarre to me.
If you just want to party with your not-so-close friends, why add that to an already busy day? And why ask someone to come and party in celebration of an event you chose for them not to be a part of?
Can someone explain this to me?
