Stool restoration done.
Definitely looking a little nicer than when we found it in the recycling center :)
Don't have a before picture of the whole thing (my specialty!), just from the restoration progress.
I remember spotting those laminated, bent legs and thought "that's too nice for throwing away", so we took it home.
#Autism could be diagnosed with #stool sample, scientists say https://www.theguardian.com/science/article/2024/jul/08/autism-could-be-diagnosed-with-stool-sample-microbes-research?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other “Scientists have long known that autistic people tend to have less varied #bacteria living in their #DigestiveSystem, but whether this is due to autism in some way, or actually contributes to the condition, is a matter for debate. Fourth coat of varnish applied. Third one was problematic due to my shack getting too hot. Had to sand off some pimples.
One more to go, I think. I've never gotten away with less than five coats (only when refreshing existing varnish, an annual task on the boat).
Meanwhile, the seat has been painted white. Byebye spiderweb pattern. A new and improved pattern may appear instead, it's in @vaviurka's hands now.
Here they dangle.
Rust stain sanded very gently just to knock down any wood fibers the vinegar has raised, then wiped with vaitspiritas and a coat of varnish brushed on and tipped off.
Looks promising.
That'll do.
Cut the tiny pieces by hand with a basic wooden mitre box. One does get good at it after all these fiddly small pieces. Eventually.
Then trimmed back and sanded.
Two I messed up when trimming and had to redo, that'll show up in the end, but hopefully not too much.
Stool leg restoration experiments.
Nope.
Nope.
Hmm.
Maybe!

Fun fact: Cork grows in Spain, in the top of glass bottles filled with sparkling wine. A lot of Cava must be consumed for a good harvest of cork.
Stool legs patched up and re-bent to match.
Not sure what to do with the feet. They're splintered and worn.
Attach some new wood? Trim off? Wrap with something? Paint? Leave it?
Suggestions welcome.
Stool legs got equalized with the hot gun, as they weren't quite the same shape. Worked okay and didn't set fire to anything!
Not sure what to do about the worn feet. Maybe make some wooden clogs? :)
Also got out the old Bahco 665 that I once scraped an entire 40 ft hull with and took off the remains of the old lacquer.
Re-laminated the last stool leg, much faster now that I have two vises to clamp in.
Now I'm filling the many dents and chips on the legs with sawdust + glue. For deep holes it's best to pre-stir the mix, for small ones I just applied glue to the leg and press it into a pile of sawdust.
When dry, it's easy to trim off the excess with a chisel.
Traditionally one is supposed to use varnish + sawdust, but glue is easier to keep.
Restoring laminated bent wooden stool legs takes time. Glueing the delaminated parts back together requires more pressure than a clamp can provide, so the bench vise is occupied every night.
And you can only do a small section at a time. The piece of scrap here focuses the force on the glued spot. Without it, not enough force can be applied to force the laminated pieces back together.
Once the PVA glue has dried, they stay put.
