The 3-yr-long investigation of #Trump & his allies for #ElectionInterference in #Georgia faced a major hurdle on Thurs as a judge began to assess whether the lead prosecutor & her office should be disqualified from the case.

A hearing is underway to delve into a romantic relationship between the 2 main prosecutors — #FaniWillis, the #FultonCounty DA, & #NathanWade, whom she hired to run the case. The defense argues that their relationship has created an untenable conflict of interest.

A disqualification would throw the case in limbo. Here are the details:

The revelations about the relationship between #FaniWillis & #NathanWade surfaced in a #legal filing last month from Michael Roman, a fmr #Trump campaign ofcl who is one of the defendants in the #Georgia #ElectionInterference case. Willis & Wade acknowledged the relationship in a Feb court filing.

#FaniWillis, #NathanWade & a number of others have also been subpoenaed to testify at the hearing.
Lawyers for Roman & other defendants are seeking to disqualify the 2 prosecutors from the case. Their argument hinges on assertions of a financial conflict of interest: Wade has been paid more than $650k since he was hired in 2021, & during that time he has spent money on vacations w/ Willis. Defense lawyers argue that the money paid to Wade creates an incentive for Willis to prolong the case.

The financial conflict of interest argument is IMO thin. What may actually disqualify #FaniWillis & #NathanWade from prosecuting #Trump & his co-defendants could be if they lied to the court. If it is in fact true that their relationship began before Willis hired Wade to lead the prosecution, when both swore in court filings otherwise, that would be terrible.

#NathanWade is sticking to his contention that his romantic relationship w/ #FaniWillis began in 2022, after he started working for the DA's office in November 2021. It was “early” 2022, he says in response to the defense attorney's probing.

It’s nearly 5 hours into this *hearing*, it is notable how far it has gone beyond the underlying facts of the #Trump #RICO #ElectionInterference case, that have barely been addressed at all. To be abundantly clear: FOUR of the 19 #codefendants have already pleaded #GUILTY, including #SidneyPowell, #JennaEllis, #KennethChesebro & some of Trump’s other apologists/ci-defendants.
