#Republicans reject spending bill, under pressure from #Trump & #ElonMusk
Unless #Congress acts, a #GovernmentShutdown deadline looms just past midnight Saturday.
Republicans rejected #House Speaker #MikeJohnson’s bipartisan plan to avert a govt shutdown, as Trump & #Musk joined a broad swath of the #HouseRepublicans on Wed to condemn a compromise bill full of Democratic #policy priorities.

The rebuke, which built steadily through the day & culminated w/a long written *statement* from #Trump in the late afternoon, has forced #MikeJohnson back to the drawing board on a plan to prevent a Christmastime #GovernmentShutdown — & maintain the support of his chaotic conference to be reelected as #speaker early next year [].
“Your elected representatives” [or, you know, whatever, some greedy #billionaires who for the time being share your interests] “have heard you & now the *terrible* bill is dead,” #ElonMusk boasted on #X, the #SocialMedia site he owns [& thru which he spreads #propaganda] after he spent the day blasting the #legislation. “The *voice of the people*” [aka some rich fucks] “has triumphed!”
#MikeJohnson has not outlined a backup plan [meaning – you guessed it, the #people get the short end of the stick] & multiple people familiar w/the real-time conversations said the next step remains unclear, as leaders would need significant support from both parties — & [douche-bag] #Trump — to pass a funding extension. If #Congress doesn’t extend the deadline, most federal operations would shut down at 12:01 AM Sat, though the effects of a #GovernmentShutdown wouldn’t fully kick in until Mon.
#Trump has…demanded the #House ditch items that #Democrats negotiatied. He also requested #Republicans extend the suspension of the #DebtCeiling, a limit on how much the #US govt can #borrow, which is set to expire early in his new term next year.
…#MikeJohnson had introduced #legislation to extend federal funding until March 14, send $110.4B to natural disaster survivors & codify a host of unrelated #policy changes.…
@Nonilex This is all unbearable!!!
@Nonilex I've heard people who experienced the collapse of country say it happened a little at a time then suddenly all at once.
Some expect things to go badly after the handover in January, but you've gotta wonder if they might be dumb enough to trigger an earlier all-at-once when you least expect it.
@Nonilex Silver lining: Mike Johnson's experience as speaker is pretty much exactly what he deserves. Under the bus with you, boot licker !
