#Trump repeated his claim, made countless times during the 2024 campaign, “many from prisons & mental institutions” had illegally entered the country through the southern border. He has offered no evidence for this.

(I still think he doesn’t understand the meaning of “asylum seekers” he thinks they are people from insane asylums)

With his opening lines that “we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer,” #Trump plunges into a list of #grievances, describing America as a nation willing to spend “in the defense of foreign borders” — read: #Ukraine — “but refuses to defend American borders.”

This is a redux of his 2017 “American Carnage” address: He describes America as a catastrophic mess of crime & chaos.

He speaks of “annihilation” & disparages the current government — w/ #Biden sitting nearby.

#Trump calls his election a mandate to end “a horrible betrayal” & declares that “America’s decline is over.”

#Biden has a slight smile on his face as Trump talks about betrayal. He was no doubt ready for a speech that would denounce his admin.

Biden & Harris are watching as Trump promises to declare an emergency at the border & gets a standing ovation from many in the Rotunda. Biden is watching w/his hand over his mouth. Needless to say, neither is applauding.

As #Trump disparages immigrants as criminals & outlines his plans — there are not “millions & millions of criminal aliens” as he claims — a largely white crowd is applauding in the Rotunda.

#Trump uses his speech to declare that there “are only two genders: male and female,” according to government policy. That has to be a first for an inaugural speech.

Trump declares that he will stop efforts to “socially engineer #race & #gender into every aspect of public & private life” & will instead “forge a society that is colorblind & merit-based.” (Yeah, right)

Unreal, #Trump, after saying he wants to be a “peacemaker,” said he plans to rename the #GulfOfMexico the “Gulf of America.”

Hillary Clinton burst out laughing when Trump said he would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

#Trump also hails President McKinley, who got the #PanamaCanal going & fought the Spanish-American war. Trump is making it clear that he wants control of the canal back, & falsely claims that “#China is operating the Panama Canal.” He ends by saying “we’re taking it back.”

#Trump is signing documents before the formal lunch at the Capitol, including one that said US flags should be flown at full staff on his & future inauguration days even if it otherwise interrupts a mourning period where the flag would be half staff; the flags were all at half staff mourning the passing of President #JimmyCarter. The prospect that flags would be at half staff as a sign of respect for the former President Carter pissed Trump off.

#Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino said the #PanamaCanal “is & will continue” to belong to Panama.

His remarks respond to what #Trump said about the canal during his #inauguration speech.

The Panama Canal “has foolishly been given to the country of Panama after the United States — the United States, I mean, think of this, spent more money than ever spent on a project before & lost 38,000 lives in the building of the Panama Canal,” Trump said. “We gave it to Panama, & we’re taking it back.”

President Mulino responded in a Spanish-language statement saying, “I must reject in its entirety the words expressed by President Donald #Trump regarding #Panama & its Canal.”

“The Canal is & will continue to be Panama’s & its administration will continue to be under Panamanian control with respect to its permanent neutrality,” the statement reads.

In his speech, #Trump also suggested that “#China is operating the #PanamaCanal.”

Mulino rejected that, saying, “There is no presence of any nation in the world that interferes with our administration.”

Mulino also responded to #Trump’s assertion that the canal was given to #Panama.

“The Canal was not a concession from anyone. It was the result of generational struggles that culminated in 1999, as a result of the Torrijos-Carter treaty &, since then until now, for 25 years, without interruption, we have managed & expanded it responsibly to serve the world & its commerce, including the United States,” Mulino said in his statement.

The new #Trump White House on Monday said that President Trump would withdraw the #UnitedStates from the #ParisAgreement, the pact among almost all nations to fight #ClimateChange.

By withdrawing, the US would join #Iran, #Libya & #Yemen as the only 4 countries not party to the agreement, under which nations work together to keep #GlobalWarming below levels that could lead to to #environmental catastrophe.

The move, one of several #energy-related announcements in the hours immediately following his inauguration, is yet another about-face in #UnitedStates participation in global #climate negotiations. During his first term #Trump withdrew from the #ParisAccord, but then President #Biden quickly rejoined in 2020 after winning the White House.

The acting head of the #US #immigration court system, along with 3 other key leaders of the court system, were fired soon after the #Trump administration took office on Monday, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

#Trump’s #ExecutiveOrders are so far entirely BS. Almost every single one will have no effect. They are either “messaging” like withdrawal from the #ParisAccord (technically Trump needs to submit a letter to the UN & then that doesn’t go into effect for a full year) or will 100% be legally challenged.

Among the #Biden executive actions rescinded by #Trump include an order that directed the federal government to prioritize racial #equity in its policy making.

The Trump admin revoked a Biden executive order that created a task force to reunify families separated at the southern #border. In the time the task force was in place, it reunified nearly 800 children with their parents, according to a report it released last year.

#Trump rescinded a #Biden #ExecutiveOrder that directed the federal govt to rebuild the US #refugee program. Refugee admissions will be suspended for at least 4 months.
2 of the 78 rescissions Trump announced restore #immigration orders that Biden revoked through EO 4yrs ago. One addresses civil immigration enforcement. In 2017,Trump issued an order to strengthen immigration enforcement inside the country & to withhold funds from local agencies that refuse to cooperate w/immigration enforcement.

#Trump, from the Oval Office, has signed what he described as “full pardons” for about 1,500 #Jan6 defendants. He said he also signed commutations of sentences for 6 defendants but did not say who they were.

Trump signed an #ExecutiveOrder that will attempt to amend the #14thAmendment to revoke #BirthrightCitizenship. The president cannot change the #Constitution on his own, so it’s not yet clear how Trump plans to withhold the benefits of #citizenship to a group of people born in the #UnitedStates. The move is all but certain to be challenged in court.

In its first cuts, #ElonMusk’s *non-governmental* advisory group, the Department of Government Efficiency, or #DOGE, posted a screenshot on X of a deleted page for the Office of Personnel Management’s inter-agency council for chief #diversity officers. The council advised agencies on diversity, #equity & #inclusion programs. #Trump on Monday promised the end of #DEI practices in federal government & said hiring would be based on merit (sure, Jan). “It begins,” Musk posted.

#Trump moved quickly on Monday to withdraw the #UnitedStates from the #WorldHealthOrganization, a move that #PublicHealth experts say will undermine the nation’s standing as a global #health leader & make it harder to fight the next #pandemic.

Trump has been railing against the #WHO since 2020, when he attacked the agency over its approach to the #coronavirus pandemic & threatened to withhold funding from it. But after he lost the 2020 election the threat didn’t materialize [too busy criming].

Leaving the #WHO would mean, among other things, that the #CDC would have NO ACCESS to the global #data that the agency provides. When China characterized the genetic sequence of the novel coronavirus in 2020, it released the info to WHO, which shared it w/other nations.

More recently, the #WHO has become a target of #conservatives over its work on a “pandemic treaty” to strengthen #pandemic preparedness & set legally binding policies for member countries on surveillance of pathogens, rapid sharing of outbreak data, & building up local manufacturing & supply chains for #vaccines & treatments, among others.

#Trump has issued an #ExecutiveOrder rescinding any security clearances still held by 51 former #intelligence officials who signed a letter amid the 2020 election campaign suggesting the laptop of #HunterBiden obtained by Republican operatives was potentially #Russian #disinformation. That letter has become one of Trump’s biggest complaints about what he claims has been election interference against him.

#Trump’s #ExecutiveOrder targeting security clearances also lashes out at a longtime nemesis: #JohnBolton, his former national security adviser.

The order strips Bolton of any security clearance he may still have, accusing him of writing a “reckless” book with sensitive information about his time in the Trump White House.

This is another instance where Trump is returning to personal grievance from the end of his first admin.

#Trump’s #ExecutiveOrder decrying the “weaponization” of the #DOJ instructs his AG to scour federal law enforcement agencies, the #SEC, & the #FTC for any indications of political bias in work conducted under the #Biden admin.

The same executive order instructs the director of national intelligence to conduct a similar review of #intelligence agencies. Both reviews will culminate in a report to the WH & recommendations for “remedial action.”

#Trump fulfilled his promise to rescind #Biden’s 2023 executive order on #ArtificialIntelligence safety. The Biden order set #safety standards for the use of #AI across the federal government. Trump’s #ExecutiveOrder leaves a vacuum on federal AI #regulations, while some states & European nations have enacted laws to regulate the fast-growing #technology that poses risks to #NationalSecurity & #jobs.

#Trump issued an #ExecutiveOrder short-circuiting the #security clearance vetting process for his White House staffers. Anyone on a list submitted by his White House counsel is to “immediately” be granted a Top Secret/Secure Compartmented Information-level clearance good for 6 months.

#Trump has set in motion what is likely to be an eventual restoration of his first term ban on travel to the United States of citizens from several predominantly #Muslim countries. He issued an #ExecutiveOrder directing a 60-day study to come up with a list “identifying countries throughout the world for which vetting & screening information is so deficient as to warrant a partial or full suspension on the admission of nationals from those countries.”

#Trump signed an #ExecutiveOrder challenging an international agreement the Biden administration had negotiated to try and stop large multinational #corporations from booking profits in countries with low taxes.

In 2021, >130 countries signed onto the agreement, which included a new 15% minimum tax companies are supposed to pay in every country where they operate.

Among the #ExecutiveOrders #Trump signed today was an order restoring the federal #DeathPenalty — although President #Biden commuted the death sentences of all but three of the prisoners who were on the federal death row. Trump’s order also #mandates the use of the death penalty in any case where someone is convicted of murdering a law enforcement officer [unless it’s Brian Sicknick apparently] or if an #undocumented migrant is convicted of a crime that is eligible for the death penalty.

The American Civil Liberties Union & other #ImmigrantRights groups sued the #Trump admin over its hours-old #ExecutiveOrder to stop conferring #citizenship to anyone born in the #UnitedStates. The lawsuit was filed in New Hampshire.
