#RashaAlawieh, a Rhode Island transplant #doctor & asst prof at #BrownUniversity, was detained on Thurs in Boston after visiting family in Lebanon, her cousin claimed in a lawsuit challenging #Alawieh's detention.
Sorokin ordered on Friday that Alawieh be kept in the US & brought to a court hearing on Monday. He wrote Monday morning that "Dr. Alawieh is now in Lebanon."
#DHS said in a stmnt on Mon that Alawieh had told #CBP officers that she traveled to #Beirut to attend the funeral of #Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
"A visa is a privilege not a right—glorifying & supporting terrorists who kill Americans is grounds for visa issuance to be denied. This is commonsense security," the DHS stmnt continued.
Acc/to court documents filed by the govt, #RashaAlawieh was questioned by a #CBP officer about photos on her phone that appeared to depict #Hezbollah fighters. Alawieh allegedly said they were shared by others within WhatsApp messaging groups of friends & family.
Alawieh allegedly said her interest in Nasrallah was in his standing as a #religious figure within the Shia #Muslim community, as opposed to his role as a political leader….
@Nonilex Ugh, are they trying to resurrect the old privilege vs right distinction?
Didn't they learn the lesson that no matter what a thing is called the gov't can not take it or deny it without due process.
