Obscured by the absurd theatricality of this #Trump presidency is a dangerous erosion of the principle upon which the nation was founded: the rule of #law.
The genius of the #Constitution is its system of #ChecksAndBalances, w/ #ThreeEqualBranches of the federal government sharing #power. Trump is claiming the authority to rule as he pleases, arrogantly daring #Congress & the #judiciary to stop him.
On Sat, in defiance of a federal court order, #Trump used the #AlienEnemiesAct — a 1798 law previously invoked only in wartime — to deport 137 Venezuelan immigrants, flying them & 124 others to #ElSalvador for open-ended detention in a grim prison complex accused of brutal #HumanRights violations. The WH claims, without offering proof, that the #Venezuelans were members of a violent gang called Tren de Aragua, which ofcls call a “terrorist” group waging “war” against the #UnitedStates.
The irony is rich, because the whole made-for-TV episode — complete w/video of migrants being hauled away in shackles, having their heads shaved & being forced to kneel before their Salvadoran jailers — was clearly intended to #terrorize the millions of undocumented migrants who remain in the #US.
Also, those images are red meat for tRump’s base.
That music video of purported terrorists being shaved, shackled, and frog marched into a slave labor camp in El Salvador has a real Leni Riefenstahl feel to it.
Yep. That’s some serious Nazi propaganda.
@Nonilex The US is paying El Salvador $20K per prisoner per year to imprison them, with El Salvador being able to roll that over indefinitely every year. (Indefinitely, being the state of their imprisonment, as they are not actually being held for actual crimes or convictions. They are merely accused gang members.)
Now the president of El Salvador is saying that this, plus forced prison labor, will expand and hopefully turn prisons in El Salvador into a profitable cash cow.
Subsidized slavery.
Too bad it took an idiot to destroy the genius
