Private groups work to identify & report #student #protesters for possible #deportation
When a protester was caught on video in January at a NY rally against #Israel, only her eyes were visible between a mask & headscarf. But days later, photos of her entire face, along w/her name & employer, were circulated online.

“Months of them hiding their faces went down the drain!” a fledgling #technology company boasted in a social media post, claiming its #FacialRecognition tool had identified the woman despite the coverings.
She was anything but a lone target. The same software was also used to review images taken during months of pro-#Palestinian marches at #US #colleges.
A #RightWing Jewish group said some identified w/the tool were on a list of names it gave to #Trump’s admin, urging that they be deported in accordance w/his call for the expulsion of foreign #students who participated in “pro-jihadist” #protests.
Other pro-#Israel groups have enlisted help from supporters on #campuses, urging them to report foreign students who participated in protests against the war in #Gaza to #ICE.
The push to ID masked #protesters using #FacialRecognition & turn them in is blurring the line between #public #law enforcement & #private groups.And the efforts have stirred anxiety among foreign #students worried that #activism could jeopardize their legal status.
“We don’t know who these individuals are or what they’re doing with this information,”said Abed Ayoub, natl exec dir of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Cmte. “Essentially the administration is outsourcing surveillance.”

@Nonilex Someone I was chatting to yesterday tried a bit of victim blaming re the Turkish student at Tufts. I argued vigorously in reply and they backed off.
But their underlying point was that someone I care about isn't at risk because they are smart enough to "do the right thing" and "keep their head down" - contentious enough arguments on their own, but also totally ignoring that when a govt encourages people to report on each other, a whole new world of opportunity opens up for anyone who wants to enact personal vendettas, or give themselves an advantage.
On a short list for a job? Phone in an anonymous tip to ICE about your competition. Dumped in a relationship? Report your ex for pro-terrorist activities.
Bowing one's head to fascists is very far from the right thing to do...
These craven shameless bootlickers who think they're doing good and don't even realize people like them are the foundations that uphold oppressive systems... it's chilling.
@Nonilex So bleak. I've read about people in Nazi Germany turning in their Jewish neighbors because their apartment was nicer, and hey presto, now it was vacant and available.
@Nonilex When this technology is used to track the movements of politicians on their way to known Epstein Islands and Diddis Rooms I think it will be a good tool.
The problem is that when it is in the hands of (gov) agencies it is used to gather blackmail data to control leaders instead of eliminating antisocial acts.
These sorts of tools need to be in private hands, only.
1. Facial recognition software is proven to misidentify people of color *without* any of their face covered let alone what these people are claiming to be able to do.
2. #MattLieb's and #DanielMate's #BadHasbara podcast has been educating me on how lazy and obvious the Israeli propaganda has become in the decades since the creation of Israel.
It's likely in that ending story of "a classmate who supports Israel accused him and others in the room of being responsible for the fliers" that accusing classmate was the one responsible for the flyers. He wanted to intimate them to alieve his own anxiety over October 7.
