@rbreich I fully agree with everything said in this. But... which Democrats? The politicians are focused on campaign fund raising because that is what politics in this nation have become: pay to play. They can't run on policies alone because the opposition will "media blitz" them out of existence. We are not in a position to remove Citizens United, but that plus regulations to limit campaign contributions are what is needed. Far too late to do anything like that now.

@georgelenzer @rbreich

Hypothetically, "Corporate Democrats" are blue tie wearing Republicans; in-party parasites slowing down secular progressivism to the point Democrats are functionally stunted.

@rbreich Bravery and intellectual independence can be spoken in the first person.
Try “I think..”, “I will..”, “I did…”
If we think and do by ourselves, the “Dems” “brand” will improve.

@rbreich

The problem with Democrats as they don’t see a rival political force pulling “leftward”, a rival force that demands representation, that demands government get out of our lives in all the right way, drives out the corporate invasion into our lives and provides services in all the right ways.

billionaires are waging against all humanity. Their goal is to either subjugate or kill us. A tyranny by *their gov* taking our freedoms, dignity and lives.

It’s that simple.

@rbreich Agreed, why do ya'll keep making this about red vs blue?? That's literally playing into it. Create community and movilize as one, this whole "democrats have to fight republicans" only makes the public against each other. In power, blue and red benefit from the same systems; systems put in place FOR control. Neither, as a whole, are there for the greater good but to serve a few. (yes, there are good people with good intentions in office, but the problem it's with the system itself)

@ag_03 @rbreich
Red vs Blue has organized itself into a billion dollar marketing industry. There's a lot of money to be made by keeping elections razor thin and emotions raging, and that money deliberately warps people's perception of reality to perpetuate this system.

@RnDanger @ag_03 @rbreich

just like pro sports or nascar..

panem et circenses

@rbreich they aren't going to. they are going to enable fascism every step of the way until they find themselves in a concentration camp completely bewildered by how they got there.

@rbreich

yup. there is no center in the US. that's fascism light. what the two major parties call radical left or communism is really still right of center for most of the civilized world.

@rbreich

The data, reviewed in enlightening detail in this Mike Podhorzer piece (weekendreading.net/p/how-trump) and discussed in this Charting the Way Forward episode (chartingthewayforward.buzzspro) strongly supports Prof. Reich's position.

There is an important piece missing from Reich's analysis and argument, the centrality of dog-whistle politics and scapegoating to MAGA’s project.

Not tackling this head on by focusing only on economics is a recipe for continued electoral failure.

and gender must be part of every political and quasi-political conversation and communication.

Why ? Because voters marinated in MAGA propaganda will vote against policy they know is good for them if they think "others" will benefit.

@joeinwynnewood @rbreich honestly the colored flags brigade has had their 15 mins, and now needs to quiet down and stop sucking all of the oxygen out of any room they are in. time to focus on policies that help ALL Americans. Not just the 50% or the 13% or the 5% and least of all the 1%. Lets aim more for the 85-95% of society. The politics of division leads nowhere. A lot of gender/striped colored flag stuff leads there. Dems need to watch their step here.

@rbreich democrats are right of center to begin with. If they went to the center that would mean they are moving left. Just look at what Biden did during his term. Hell they fully armed a #genocide. Democrats are just republican lite.

@captainrob@mastodon.social @rbreich@masto.ai I agree with you. I assume Robert considers the Democrats to be left of centre and wants them to stop moving closer to the centre. (I'm probably preaching to the choir.)

@rbreich

Indeed as the Democrats race for the centre the Republicans keep moving it to the right.

@rbreich We would not be in this mess if Democrats had any skill at maintaining public perception or any resilience. I am not expecting them to suddenly find it at this late hour.

@profdc9 @rbreich sad but true.

Joe had good policies, but sadly, his advanced age was a mistake. A failure by high level dems to plan for the future. Kamala- well, her's was a hope vote on my part.. I voted for a continuation of Joe's policies, not for Kamala personally. She was always a troubled candidate. Not enough people were willing to look past that and consider the larger perspective. In the battle for personality, she lost out to a demagogue and a bully.

@profdc9 @rbreich Dems also need to give more consideration to merit and viability, and less to nepotism and seniority (Pelosi.. Feinstein..) One sometimes has the impression that the old guard is resting on their laurels while still holding political office. They should become party old guard and party royalty AFTER they retire. Not before. Old crones sit in their elected chairs for too too long.There needs to be churn. Meritocracy, new faces. AOC. Perfect example. Pelosi, Feinstein, and

@profdc9 @rbreich and sadly, even Joe himself are evidence of a party that's running out of gas and new ideas. The 60s are long over. Middle age voters don't remember them. It may have been the current dem leadership's decade of glory but times have moved on. Changed. The battle is still the same, oddly (or not..) but a new generation needs to animate the party and have some space and breathing room to develop new ideas and solutions to the age old problems without old white haired crones

@profdc9 @rbreich breathing down their necks, stifling them.. certainly there is a need for discipline, but Camelot was a long time ago & is long dead. A newer younger generation needs to find their voice & effect change in their own ways, in accordance with the old classical values. Dems are having a rough time bridging that generational transition The right OTOH, has no intention of doing so They just want the old days to return & will grow new stooges in their right wing petri dish as needed.

@profdc9 @rbreich

planning poorly for the future and not planning at all look a lot alike, in the end. Both yield similar results.

@rbreich "Meet me in the middle, says the unjust man. As you take a step towards him, he takes a step back. Meet me in the middle, says the unjust man..." quote from @JuliusGoat

Things are so tilted to the fascist side, LBJ's common sense, barely left leaning "Four Freedoms" are now "hyper left wing" AKA Bernie Sanders "communist / socialist / Californian / Democrat (ergo heretical)".

Mention them without mentioning LBJ, and the comment section on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and SubStack will be a million insults equating it to Mao's "Great Leap backwards".
