The Judgement of Paris by Franz Stuck, 1923. Private collection.
The story of the judgment of Paris has been popular with painters ever since the ancient story was first told.
According to the story, Eris, the goddess of discord, threw a golden apple engraved with "To the fairest one" into a group at a wedding. The goddesses Athena, Hera and Aphrodite argued over who it was intended for, so called on Paris of Troy to choose.
To cut a long story short, Paris's choice started the Trojan war.
The story has probably been incredibly popular with painters because it's a great excuse to paint three naked women standing around looking hot, and invite the viewer to choose who is sexiest.
@CatHat @outerspec @vagina_museum it's definitely Aphrodite. /me casually abducts Helen of Troy...
