$This marginalization is not new. Africa has long been treated as a site of external competition rather than an agent in shaping world politics. But as the old order fractures, the continent faces renewed pressures. The Trump administration’s approach to Africa is particularly revealing. Having cut aid to South Africa over land reform disputes and its pro-Palestinian foreign policy, the US has signaled that it views the continent not as a partner but as a bargaining chip in wider geopolitical struggles. This approach mirrors those of other global actors, from China’s debt-driven infrastructure projects to Russia’s use of mercenaries and Gulf states’ expanding economic influence. The result is a world in which African states are forced to navigate between competing power blocs, often at the expense of their own sovereignty.$
