Evidently all the #IndianaJones #Movies were pieced together from bits, rewritten, rewritten, and rewritten. Maybe none of them is truly great. It's just #Raiders seemed fresh b/c it was first and each one since has seemed less so, until finally...
I find #Movies based on #Novels and novel series protagonists superior to #IndianaJones b/c the former have rich, cohesive backstory to adapt. By contrast, Indiana Jones has flashy props - whip, hat - and he is deeper than authentic 1930s and 40s movie hero characterizations, but not vastly deeper. He's made to suit the plot as a shuffle of writers thinks up the plot. W/ novel protagonists, it's the opposite; they inspire plots that suit them.
Yes, the #IndianaJones #Movies have inspired a slew of #Novels, but it's not a canon the movies stick to. It was 18 years between #LastCrusade and #CrystalSkull because the plot *didn't* flow naturally from the character. #GeorgeLucas was locked on his alien idea and #StevenSpielberg - who'd already made Close Encounters and E.T. - rejected the idea for years before giving in.
As much as I've said about #indianaJones around #DialOfDestiny's opening weekend, I should point out #Raiders is my favorite #Movie all time and I'll see #DialOfDestiny eventually, probably on disc.
Some friends and I saw #IndianaJonesAndTheKingdomOfTheCrystalSkull in a latenight preview. I figured, "This is the finale. You only live once." I can't have that feeling again even though #DialOfDestiny probably is the finale.
To my mind, #LastCrusade remains the true finale. It's right in the title. By contrast, #CrystalSkull and #DialOfDestiny were stuck in development for ages and we didn't know if they'd come to fruition.
#HarrisonFord can't be believed on these matters. For years he said he'd never play #HanSolo again, yet he did, not only in #ForceAwakens but also in #RiseOfSkywalker. Now he says #DialOfDestiny will be his last #IndianaJones. He also said that about #CrystalSkull.
@sogerald I just read the other day that George stuck with the idea of aliens for years as it fitted the 1950s B movie idea. As you say, Spielberg refused. Apparently George came back some time later and said it's not aliens, is interdimentional beings. Spielberg didn't think that was as bad and we got Crystal Skull.
