«I am unforgiving of GOP Congressional cowardice. They pledged an oath to support and defend the Constitution. They have historically sent millions into war, the sometimes-tenuous justification being a need to defend our way of life. There is now a coup afoot and it falls to Congress itself to defend us.

Any in Congress sustaining the coup because they fear for their job, their safety or the safety of their family are committing treason.

Protecting and defending the US is not optional, something to do if it's convenient. It is a sworn duty. »

A quotation from Aristotle

For of course it is not always the same thing to be a good man and a good citizen.

[οὐ γὰρ ἴσως ταὐτὸν ἀνδρί τ᾽ ἀγαθῷ εἶναι καὶ πολίτῃ παντί.]

Aristotle (384-322 BC) Greek philosopher
Nicomachean Ethics [Ἠθικὰ Νικομάχεια], Book 5, ch. 2 (5.2.11) / 1130b.29 (c. 325 BC) [tr. Thomson (1953)]

As we have observed from the #oligopolistic #BigTech in the past two decades, these unbridled #capitalistic endeavors do not lend themselves to #selfregulation for the #publicgood. Likewise, it will be naive to carry-on hoping that #OpenAI and the other #generativeAI players will #selfregulate. That's the #duty of elected #governments and #public #agencies, and the promulgation of effective #AI #regulations is now #longOverdue!

A quotation from Marcus Aurelius:

«
Every hour staunchly, as a Roman and a man, resolve to do the work in hand, with scrupulous and unaffected dignity, affectionately, freely, justly; securing respite for yourself from all other intruding regards. And this you will secure, if you perform each task as though it were your last, free fr…

#Heinlein concluded that higher forms of #morality are defined by one's willingness to #sacrifice self-interest and/or self-preservation out of a sense of #duty to advance the survival and well-being of a larger identity group: family, community, nation, humanity, and ultimately all Life itself.

This was the true message of #StarshipTroopers, in case you haven't actually read the book, or have only seen the ridiculous cinematic parody of the book made by Paul Verhoeven.

The reason it is important to include the Golden Rule is because it implies something that the other two do not: #charity or #altruism, that we ought to help others in need, because we would almost certainly wish for others to help us when we are in need, ourselves.

But as Robert #Heinlein astutely observed, a sense of #duty is something that can only arise from within; it cannot be externally imposed.

And that brings up point #4, that self-preservation is the root of #morality, not its crown.
