If you can read this, you probably have your timeline set to chronological posts from accounts you follow. Basic anatomical information is subjected to online censorship. We are by far the only gynaecological health organisation who face online censorship for simply talking about vaginas and vulvas. For simply using anatomically correct words. For encouraging discussion and conversation. This is deemed "adult" by moderators.
Half the world has one. Most of us came out of one. There's nothing "adult" about this part of the anatomy. It's not like a vagina suddenly manifests on your 18th birthday!
And yet someone is making the decisions as to what you can and cannot show or say online. The tools to name their anatomy, and an understanding of what is healthy and what is not is deemed information for adults only. Perhaps it's because those writing the algorithms only encounter this normal part of the anatomy in porn.
On Instagram, our posts are shadowbanned. On Facebook, they're outright banned. We have a posting ban on Tiktok, and Bluesky even automatically labels a link to our fundraising campaign as "adult content"!
So how do we cut through? Several ways. First of all, you cannot censor the physical world in the way that it is so easy to do so online. Our London base is a space where it is free to come together to learn and celebrate.
Online, we get told to tone it down. Maybe say "fajima" or a string of characters and numbers. We choose not to do this, because that is not what it is called. Instead, we rely on organic reach and posting things which will be shared among friends.

When I still was on Insta and Birdcrap, I was shadowbanned for words like climate and biodiversity. It's propaganda platforms.
