Alaska's Rivers Are Running Orange

Their research has revealed that the #orange #streams have higher concentrations of#iron, less dissolved #oxygen, and more #acidic water than nearby clearwater streams. The pH of some smaller rivers is as low as 3.5, which is even more acidic than orange juice. One theory is that rising temp. are causing #permafrost to thaw, releasing #iron that was previously locked up in the frozen soils.

Iron-bearing minerals appear to be the culprit, but the reason behind their increasing abundance is not totally clear. In recent years, researchers have documented how numerous streams in the Alaskan Arctic Region have become increasingly orange-tinted. One of the impacted riverways is the monumental Kobuk River, which weaves through northwestern Alaska for some 451 kilometers (280 miles).

Some concerning changes are impacting the waters around #Bermuda.

After 40 years of tracking, scientists have noticed that the #Atlantic #Ocean surrounding the archipelago is warming and losing #oxygen, as well as becoming increasingly #salty and #acidic. These observations give a sense of the rate of change in the recent past of ocean warming and ocean chemistry. They provide key indications of future changes in the next decades.

I really love the #Alien #movie #scifi franchise. Some of the best #space #horror yet.

But I kinda have a #problem. A small problem, really: Conservation of Mass.

How does a #chestburster grow into a full-sized baddy without eating its weight in #prey?

Also, it has an #exoskeleton -- where are the molted shells?

And what nutrients could it get from its food to get #blood that #acidic?

OK, OK, fine, 3 small problems. Three biggish small problems, Suspension of Disbelief notwithstanding.
